Festival of Britain Celebrations

West Yorkshire Archive Service looks back at some of the celebrations and events that occurred in our districts 60 years ago with the Festival of Britain.

Aimed at celebrating Britain’s progression and redevelopment after the Second World War, London was at the heart of the celebrations but each of our districts gave local people plenty to celebrate too!

Exhibitions were held in Temple Newsom Park and Woodhouse Moor, Leeds, with army and air force displays, a drama festival and agricultural show and gymkhana among the attractions.

Held at our Leeds office.”]The Clerk of each of the districts was responsible for corresponding with the Festival of Britain Committee in London and each district formed its own Festival Committee to organise local events and exhibitions.

Held at our Kirklees office”]Our collections include some fascinating records which give us an idea of how people, both locally and nationally, were encouraged to take part in the celebrations. The Festival of Britain display will be available to view in all five of our district offices and also at Balne Lane Library, Wakefield for the month of June.

WYAS collects a diverse range of records created by a variety of individuals, groups or businesses.  If you would like to discuss the possibility of depositing records or would like to give feedback on the types of records that you would like to see, please contact the Collections Team.
