We are going from strength to strength, finding all kinds of wonders is so exciting that the working day just disappears!

Here is a little taster of some of the things that have come to light this month…

The collection is brimming with poor law items, and in particular documents relating to Ossett have been found. Items include poor law assessment books, 1802 and 1813, settlement certificates and apprenticeship indentures galore from c1792. These are such a rich resource for researchers, especially the family and social history researcher, worth a special mention is this bastardy book 1805- c1824 with militia lists 1805-1812

We’ve unveiled a number of shop advertisements for a variety of goods in our districts including this beautiful advertisement for Gosnay’s. The Old Original Pork Pie Shop in Northgate, Wakefield offering ‘cakes and confectionery like mother made’…… which would be fantastic if mother was a Mary Berry but not so good if she was more of a King Alfred in the kitchen!

And just sometimes we find the sweetest things to make us smile, in the back pages of the Ryhill and District Homing Society minute book, 1896 – 1904 there is this child’s doodle.
