This map from 1870 shows the water gardens very much as they appear today. At the bottom of the image the reservoir shows the river Skell winding past tent hill and into the man-made canal. It passes by the moon pond and into the lake before it turns back into a more natural river form. The water flows through the area known as the Seven Bridges and into Mackershaw Wood and Chinese Wood before heading towards Ripon.
